Rain Day: DROP by for a Visit!

Since 2007 I've organized Rain Day events that educate attendees on government agency plans for keeping water clean throughout nature and communities. This year, we're bringing Rain Day to the Montgomery County Fair, August 10-18.

Who's Involved?

In collaboration with Dewberry, several government agencies have become involved:

  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)
  • U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
  • National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA)

Play and Learn!

Together, we've created a variety of games and handouts to share our knowledge of rain and runoff:

  • NOAA weathermen will discuss differences in clouds and how the weather is forecasted (Monday through Friday)
  • Educational activities for children will show how rainfall and water impacts the environment
    • Physical Watershed Model – measure how runoff changes with different types of land-use
    • Minnow Racetracks – race minnows and build an appreciation for the animals that live in our creeks and watersheds
    • Lego® Water Table – build structures that lie within flowing water
    • Hurricane Foot Wash – feel the force of hurricane blasts of water
    • Cloud in a Box – see how water droplets form a cloud
  • Information on rain barrels, rain gardens, green roofs, and testing instruments for water quality including pH, chlorides, and detergents will be available
