SENTEC supports state-of-the-art, bio-based industry research. The 26,000-square-foot building is located at Danville's Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. Sustainable design elements in the facility include a vegetated roof to reduce stormwater run-off, a cistern for capturing rainwater for use in irrigation, a mechanical system that uses chilled beam technology and heat recovery, advanced sensor controls, and optimized ventilation.

The roof also features a 13.7 kw photovoltaic array for solar energy, funded in part by the City of Danville. The city, along with the American Public Power Association, also funded the installation of LED lighting in the building's public spaces.

One of SENTEC's interior walls was constructed of old brick salvaged from a former Dan River Mills textile plant. New Atlantic Contracting, Inc., the Winston-Salem-based general contractor, also recycled or re-used approximately three-fourths of the site's construction waste.
