Last month, local leaders joined Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) members and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for a formal ribbon cutting to mark the completion of several segments of widening on the Route 28 corridor in Fairfax and Loudoun counties. NVTA estimates the completed Route 28 projects are reducing traffic congestion for an estimated 125,000 drivers each day.
Since 2002, Dewberry has been engineer-of-record providing design and construction management services for the Route 28 corridor to joint venture Clark Construction and Shirley Contracting under the Public-Private Transportation Act (PPTA).
The Route 28 improvements celebrated by NVTA last month were northbound widening from McLearen Road to the Dulles Toll Road, southbound widening from Sterling Boulevard to the Dulles Toll Road, and southbound widening from the Dulles Toll Road to Route 50. These improvements were the first to be completed using NVTA funds.
"As a major commuting facility in our region, Route 28 has faced increased congestion as Northern Virginia continues to see an increase in population and employment," said Martin E. Nohe, chairman of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority. "Road widenings like these are crucial to enhancing our regional transportation network and the NVTA is proud to be part of improvements for the Route 28 Corridor."
The firm has just received approval of designs for the last phase of improvements included in the Route 28 PPTA contract, which will widen northbound Route 28 from Route 50 to McLearen Road and northbound from the Dulles Toll Road to Sterling Boulevard.
