Novus Architects, Inc. was recently recognized with an Outstanding Design award for Elementary Schools by SchoolDesigns.com for the design of Enka Intermediate School in Candler, North Carolina. Dewberry provided engineering design services as a subconsultant to Novus Architects. The school, designed for fifth- and sixth-grade students, was completed for Buncombe County Schools.
Dewberry's engineering services included fire protection, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical. The 110,000-square-foot, two-story facility has 54 classrooms and accommodates approximately 925 students, faculty, and staff. The design incorporates space for future expansions, including four additional classrooms. Features also include maker's spaces, outdoor classrooms, daylight harvesting devices, and small group technology hubs.
"Working as a design engineer on this project was an enriching experience for our entire team," said Justin Rogers, PE, LEED AP BD+C, a lead designer for Dewberry. "We're excited to have had the opportunity to contribute to a facility that will better suit the needs of the students, faculty, and staff at Enka Intermediate School."
The project was completed in 2016 and the award was announced in 2017.
