The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the design-build team of Shirley Contracting Company, LLC, and Dewberry recently celebrated the completion of the reconstruction and widening of Belmont Ridge Road from Hay Road to Gloucester Parkway just east of Leesburg in Loudoun County, Virginia.
The existing two-lane section was widened to a
four-lane, median-divided roadway. New parallel bridges carrying Belmont Ridge
Road over the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail were also completed,
eliminating the existing at-grade crossing. Additionally, a new parking lot was
designed for the W&OD Trail with a rest area including picnic benches and
landscaping. More than 3,200 linear feet of noise barriers were installed, and
shared-use paths were constructed for the entire length of the project on both
sides of the road.
The $46-million contract included field surveys,
engineering, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation, environmental
permitting, construction, quality assurance, and quality control. In addition
to providing survey, engineering, and environmental permitting services,
Dewberry also performed construction engineering and inspection for the
project.
