Feeding the Hungry, One Can at a Time

As part of National Architecture Week, Dewberry employees participated in AIA Northern Virginia’s 8th Annual Canstruction competition. Our team, as well as other area architects, built structures entirely out of canned food. The structures were evaluated by a panel of judges for the categories of Jurors’ Favorite, Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, and Best Meal. Our masterpiece, King and Queen Chess pieces at a royal wedding, was awarded an honorable mention.

Over the last seven years, the event has become one of the largest food drives benefitting the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC), in Arlington, Virginia. AFAC provides supplemental groceries to Arlingtonians who cannot afford to purchase the food they need.

This local event is part of a series of competitions supporting Canstruction, Inc.; a nonprofit organization that holds annual design and build competitions nationwide. To read more about this organization and the events, visit www.canstruction.org.
