Engaging a Community Through Academic Innovation
Martinsville, Virginia

We served as the architect and engineer on the 52,000-square-foot New College Institute (NCI) academic and training building in Martinsville, Virginia. Located on a historic block in uptown Martinsville, the building welcomes visitors and students with entrances on all sides, and pays homage to the community’s history through the use of reclaimed wood and local materials.

As the first new building for NCI's campus, we delivered a flexible, modern, and high-tech academic learning space. We created an adaptable learning environment by incorporating new types of maneuverable chairs and classrooms, which could be modified quickly to fit the instructors' and students' needs. We also designed the classrooms with technology in mind. This included expanding the classroom through high-quality teleconferencing cameras and document readers. We also made the space flexible for community enjoyment by adding mixed-use functionality through formal and informal collaborative spaces, workforce training spaces, high bay advanced manufacturing space, laboratories, simulated business spaces, and a grand lecture hall open for community interaction.
