Redevelopment of the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, New York, included an $82 million, four-story, 375,000-SF retail podium and a new $55 million office tower located primarily above the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Flatbush Avenue Terminal. A significant challenge while providing structural and geotechnical engineering services to this project was integrating the new building frame into the existing structure, originally built circa 1902. Utilizing elements of the existing structure provided significant cost savings and reduced the impact on train operations at this significant transit hub. Both major operators, the LIRR and New York City Transit, remained fully operational throughout construction.
