Connecting Route 295 and Route 42

New Connection Alleviates Congestion on Local Roads
Camden and Gloucester Counties, New Jersey

The New Jersey Department of Transportation’s evaluation of the Route 295/Route 42/I-76 Interchange, one of the largest and most congested in southern New Jersey, identified several operational deficiencies, including the lack of direct connection between Route 295 and Route 42. Without this connection, motorists were forced to use the local roadway network. The $180 million Route 295/Route 42, Missing Moves, Bellmawr project eliminated this deficiency by constructing ramps linking Route 295 and Route 42, enhancing traffic flow within the adjacent interchange, improving safety, and alleviating traffic congestion on the local roads.

The limits of the Missing Moves project extend along Route 295 and Route 42, from Route 47 and Route 55, respectively, to the southern limits of the Route 295/Route 42/I-76 Direct Connection project. Traffic flow between the local roadways and Route 42 Northbound (NB) was also improved by constructing a new signalized intersection at Benigno Boulevard and reconfiguring the intersection of Benigno Boulevard, Edgewood Avenue, and Leaf Avenue.

The project encompassed widening and rehabilitating the twin bridges carrying Route 295 NB and Southbound (SB) over Big Timber Creek; replacement of the bridge carrying Creek Road over I-295; construction of four new bridges carrying the connecting ramps over I-295, Route 42, and the local roads; resurfacing of the two bridges carrying Route 42 NB over Big Timber Creek and the New Jersey Turnpike; and construction of 15 retaining walls, 12 sign support structures, a noise barrier, and specialized drainage structures. The bridge approach embankments are retained by mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls, which are supported through on ground improvements in lieu of surcharging these areas, to accelerate overall construction duration.

Through the implementation of creative design solutions that prioritized constructability, the Missing Moves project was completed on schedule and within budget. The highly anticipated opening directly improved operations, safety, and quality of life for over 150,000 motorists who use these regional roadways.
