Optimizing Space

The new reading room includes glass-enclosed bookshelves and a much larger, secure vault. New carpet and acoustical panels create a quiet research environment, while indirect lighting provides an even, flexible light source.

Before renovation, the majority of the materials collection was not housed in a secure vault or stored in a logical manner, staff workstations were inefficient, and the reading room did not convey the beauty and history of the site.

We conducted a space utilization study and provided interior renovations for the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library at the Alamo in San Antonio. Housed in a circa-1949, 2,800-square-foot building, the facility also contains a 1,600-square-foot addition constructed in the early 1970s.

Our renovation increased collection storage capacity from 456 linear feet to approximately 900 linear feet, improved the use of available space within the existing structure, and created a quality research environment. The renovated research room provides better access to the library's special collections, as well as a more efficient workflow for registration and materials check-out.
