I-95/Telegraph Road Interchange

Designing Better Roads and Safety Trails
Northern Virginia

The I-95/I-495/Telegraph Road Interchange and Mainline Reconstruction project was the largest single design-bid-build construction contract ever awarded by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The project involved the widening and complete reconstruction of 2.5 miles of Interstate I-95/I-495, as well as the construction of nine new bridges and two bridge widenings. This project is the westernmost portion of the overall Woodrow Wilson Bridge megaproject.

Our designers improved local roadway networks while avoiding and minimizing impacts to commercial buildings, residential properties, and the Cameron Run Stream Valley. We prepared advanced utility relocation, ground improvement recommendations, and advanced intelligent transportation systems and traffic management systems, which enabled VDOT to relocate major transmission towers; microtunnel private and public utility crossings of I-95/I- 495; and construct lightweight fill materials with a monitoring program before advertising the project to the public. We also helped create a safe and comfortable residential area by including trails that safely connect neighborhoods on both sides of I-95.
