John Young Parkway

Designing a Roadway Extension for a Constrained Area
Orlando, Florida

Florida DOT estimated a significant increase in daily vehicle use on a four-lane stretch of the John Young Parkway in Orange County, Florida. We teamed with Southland Construction on this design-build project to widen, reconstruct, and add a new alignment extension to the roadway. The project also included converting an existing at-grade intersection into an urban interchange. The original design for the two new flyover bridges included post-tensioned cast-in-place concrete integral intermediate piers, but construction would require major traffic detours that would only be permitted during certain time frames. Instead, we designed steel-plate boxes for the cap, which lowered the bridge's vertical profile, matched the bridges' steel girders, and allowed us to construct the bridge in sections that greatly reduced the need for detours.

While we were able to relocate four major utilities, our plans would bury an access manhole to a major fiber optics provider beneath 25 feet of embankment at the bridge approach. We designed an access door and tunnel directly into the side of the approach retaining wall that allowed the utilities to stay in place, saving the fiber optics provider nearly $1 million and six months of contract time.
