In order to meet the deadline and provide some leeway for the contractor, we designed the new overpass directly adjacent to the existing overpass. This allowed traffic the continued use of the old structure while the new one was constructed. As soon as the new overpass was complete, the interchange opened to traffic, successfully meeting the completion date. The contractor was then able to focus their efforts on removing the old overpass and complete the project. The entire project was progressed from concept to open traffic in little over three years, as opposed to the industry standard seven- to 10-year timeline.
