For over 20 years, Orlando, Florida's, State Road 408-Turnpike interchange lay only half constructed. This was due to the fact that it was able to handle the major traffic movements of the 1980s, the time in which the original plans were developed. However, the 2006 traffic patterns demanded the project's completion, involving the construction of two new additional ramps. We were brought in to complete the interchange using the original plans as a guide, but during the 20-year layover a residential community had been developed in close proximity to where the additional ramps were to be built.
Our solution stressed community involvement and included an update to the project design and prompted us to modify the original ramp designs by pulling it much closer to the existing turnpike. These plans included a large buffer of open land to exist between the development and the ramp.
Bowyer-Singleton & Associates, Inc., acquired by Dewberry in 2013, performed this work.
