When the U.S. Courthouse of Southern Maryland was first completed, a portion of the 188,735-square-foot facility was left as shell space for future build-out. Since 1999, we have worked with the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts and the GSA to finish these spaces and reconfigure the building to support program and technology needs. As courtrooms were built out, we reconciled the building's radial structure with the rectilinear requirements of the U.S. Courts Design Guide. The design ensured proper spacing in the well and clear sightlines throughout the courtroom while addressing accessibility requirements.
