Preventative repairs to the bridge’s six-span Double Warren Steel through-truss structure were completed ahead of schedule at three percent lower cost than the pre-bid estimate.

Safety improvements included installation of new signal heads on both ends of the bridge to restrict traffic flow while over-width vehicles cross the narrow, 15-ft-wide bridge deck.

To address bulging and cracking of the masonry wingwalls, internal structural repair measures were developed in lieu of an aesthetically disruptive exterior buttress system.

Due to cost savings elsewhere in the project, the commission-approved installation of a restricted-use boat ramp near the bridge to facilitate the annual re-enactment of Washington’s crossing each December.

The 108-year-old Washington Crossing Toll Supported Bridge spans the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey state parks commemorating the site of General George Washington's famous Christmas Day crossing in 1776. To address structural deficiencies without compromising aesthetic integrity, we identified repair measures to fit within the historic setting and minimized traffic disruptions for local commuters. The plan included a variety of elements—most notably, repairs to the Pennsylvania masonry abutment which exhibited severe bulging. Construction was completed within a short 46-day bridge closure that provided an opportunity to make additional key improvements to the bridge and also enhance Pennsylvania park facilities.
