The Hayman forest fire in 2002 significantly altered the West Creek basin's hydrology in southwest Douglas County, Colorado, resulting in increased flooding incidents. To accurately craft a flood response plan that adapted to the burn area, we incorporated a precipitation-based approach, taking mountain climate variation into account. This required in-depth knowledge of the mechanics of Colorado's mountain climate to properly measure the magnitude and duration of the rainfall causing the flooding.
The team met the ultimate goal of the project, which was to develop a simple, easy-to-use plan that can be initialized by forecast models used by the National Weather Service.
